yesssssssss.

Hey all, I'm new to ReKAL and am so happy to finally post! A while ago, my sister bought a large pink sweater at a church bazaar for this very purpose and gave a lot of the yarn to me. I'm planning on making Jaywalker Socks with the sock weight yarn. It's 100% cotton, and I'll start them as soon as I finish winding up the hank into a ball. Which won't be long. :)

well unfortunately my picture-poster just died, so pix will have to wait.

Can't wait to start!

First post of 2006!

Yay, I'm first I'm firrrrst!

:P

Soooo....

Hiya! I joined the ReKAL because Zib happened to mention it on Knittyboard RIGHT after I got my first froggables at the thrift store. I look for big items to help ensure I have enough to make whole sweaters even if a little wool is lost. The first trip, I got 3 things:

- a partly felted rust heather Old Navy in 100% lambswool (soft!),
- a stony-tweedy dark brick or mahogany Geoffrey Beene cardi that's mainly silk and wool, and is very similar in look to Elsebeth Lavold Silky Wool, but of a finer gauge
- a huuuge PURPLE 67% mohair/33% acrylic blend 80s sack by Esprit that is similarish to Rowan Kidsilk Haze in the color "Poison."

These cost a total of $4.50.

Thennnnn....the next day I was at a different store, and got:

- a candy pink heather Ann Taylor turtleneck in laceweight lambswool
- a "fire" color (red-orange-white ragg variegated) DKNY turtleneck in aran to chunky weight wool-angora-nylon (soffffft!).

Cost for both, $5.98. (That DKNY sweater originally cost somebody a chunk-o-change...haha. And Ann Taylor ain't exactly Walmart...)

(Pix of these are on my blog, http://hieromante.blogspot.com, if anyone cares. None of the pix really show the yarn well, I will have to do some yarn pr0n at some point.)

So.

Last night I started to frog the rust sweater, and saw that it's so fragile now that it really will have to be felted. It is a quite lovely color that the pix only show as baked-bean brown and it's nicer than that. I have some ideas for what I will do, but I've never felted before - so any input on how to generally plan a felted piece according to shrinkage behavior would be very much appreciated. I know I'll need to try a swatch to see what my yarn does. I also requested a couple of felting books from my library system.

Recycling ho! (nopunintended)
